Sony will launch the Playstation Mobile October 3rd

According to Pocket Gamer, Sony will be launching their highly anticipated PlayStation Mobile service. 30 Games will be available at launch from various studios. Of course this will be only available to PlayStation Certified devices like the Xperia Ion and HTC One X but this is still fantastic news for game development on Android. Luckly, according to the report Canada will be one of the launch countries so October 3rd Canadians will get to see what Sony's PlayStation Mobile SDK brings to developers.

Playstation Mobile gains two more OEMs in ASUS and Wikipad

After HTC broke the ice as Sony's first third party partner for their PlayStation Mobile platform, we expected more OEMs to join the fray. Sony annouced today at Gamescom 2012 that ASUS and Wikipad will be joining in as Third Party OEMs as well. ASUS is well known in the Android world for their Transformer line of tablets as well as being the OEM partner to Google for the Nexus 7. Wikipad on the other hand is a company behind a tablet also called Wikipad that will be aimed at the consumer gaming market with hardware chosen for gaming and actual gamepad controls.

Sony renames PlayStation Suite to PlayStation Mobile and names HTC as their first third party partner

If you recall a few months ago, word got out that HTC would be Sony's first third party partner would be HTC and it seems like against even our better judgement the rumor has come to fruition. Sony has just announced at E3 that Playstation Suite is being rebranded as Playstation Mobile and that their first third party partner will in fact be HTC. This is extremely interesting for HTC as they have yet another distinct differentiator for their phones without counting their majority stake in Beats. While this is fantastic news for HTC, we must wonder what this means for Sony's line of Android phones.

HTC phones to get Playstation Certification?

Pocket-Lint.com is reporting this morning that an Anonymous source tells them that HTC smartphones will be one of the first to receive Playstation Certification outside of the Sony brand. Color us a bit skeptical as Sony isn't exactly one to be known to share. But if this is indeed true it would be a real coup for HTC. Given their focus on multimedia with the Majority stakes in Beats, now rumors of PlayStation certification and let's not forget the potential for the first Quad-Core Tegra 3 phone on the horizon, HTC just might put itself back in the contention after a rocky end of 2011. Pocket-Lint goes on to say that PlayStation certified HTC devices would be made available in the second half of 2012 but we expect that if this rumor is true it should be a feature that should be implemented on capable devices that were launched without certification.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Review

Gaming on the go has been around just about as long as the cell phone itself. Naturally, people wanting to reduce the number of devices they carry around would most likely want their gaming device and phone in the same package. Recently, smartphones, especially slate/candybar smartphones with their massive screens, have been able to become pseudo-gaming devices. Unfortunately, hardcore gamers are usually turned off by the use of a touchscreen or a QWERTY keyboard for gaming and find the selection of mobile games rather underwhelming. A few years back, Nokia saw an opportunity to cater to the hardcore gamer demographic by creating the Nokia N-Gage; a gamepad wielding phone. Unfortunately, while the idea was a great one, the phone was a flop. Fast forward to 2011 and Sony Ericsson put out their crack at the gamer market with the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.

Sony Ericsson shows off over 20 games specifically optimized for the Xperia Play (minecraft!)

Ever since the Xperia Play hit the hands of mobile tech reviewers (including yours truly) the general feeling was that while the Xperia Play is overall a good phone, although bulky and a bit to plastic, it was a bit weak in an area that should have been a strength; and that's gaming.

New Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Commercials

With the Xperia Play headed to Rogers and other carriers in the near future, Sony Ericsson has put out some commercials featuring Kristen Schaal from Flight of the Conchords. Appropriate choice to cast for these commercials as she is rather funny and puts the point across that this phone has got game.
