[MWC 2014] Motorola Moto G is the best selling Motorola smartphone in company history

During a press dinner held by Motorola at MWC, Motorola senior vice president of product management Rick Osterloh revealed that their ultra affordable yet well rounded Moto G is now their best selling smartphone ever. This isn't a huge surprise to us as the Moto G is one of the best, if not the best, value on the smartphone market right now. Some media outlets have reported that emerging markets like India have been a hotbed of sales for the Moto G.

Interestingly, Motorola also mentions that they have made a profit on every Moto G sold and will make more once the Lenovo purchase is completed.

[MWC 2014] HTC One named best smartphone at MWC 2014

With MWC in full swing, what would a conference be without some prizes being handed out. One winner caught our attention in the category of Best Smartphone and it was one of our favorite phones of the year in the HTC One. Despite being almost a year old at this point the One impressed the judges enough to still stand out compared to 680 other entries including newer phones released in 2013.

The HTC One remained one of the most advanced smartphones throughout 2013. Its great design and excellent user interface continue to provide a differentiated user experience, standing out from the competition - Judges’comments

Given that the One was just about universally praised by most of the mobile tech media, including AndroidBugle, we are not surprised by the choice. All of this only makes us more excited for March 25th when we hope to see the follow-up to the 2014 MWC Best Smartphone.

[MWC 2014] Samsung unveils the Galaxy S5

Here is it, after months of rumors and speculations Samsung has finally unveiled the Galaxy S5. As expected Samsung has packed the S5 to the brim with the latest hardware including a 5.1 inch Full HD 1080o display, 2.5 GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 801 (one of the first phones with the Xperia Z2), Adreno 330 GPU, 2GB of RAM, 16/32GB of Internal storage expandable by up to 128GB via microSD card, Wifi 802.11 ac with MIMO (2x2), USB 3.0, IP67 Water and Dust Resistance, 16MP Camera with 4K recodring capabilities, Heart Rate Monitor, Figerprint Scanner Home Button, LTE Cat. 4 Capabilities (150/50mbps), 2800mAh battery and Android 4.4.2.

In terms of the looks, the Galaxy S5 looks very much like the S4 from the front but in the back you see a drastic change as Samsung forgoes the glassy hyperglaze of the S4 and like the Note 3 opts instead for a leather like plastic textured back that is surprisingly reminiscent of the original Nexus 7.

We've also gotten word from our friends at Samsung that the Galaxy S5 will be available in Canada (presumably in April like the rest of the world) from Bell, Eastlink, Fido, Koodo, MTS, Rogers, SaskTel, TELUS, Videotron, Virgin Mobile and WIND Mobile (noticeably absent is Mobilicity).

The Galaxy S5 will come in Black, White, Blue and Gold although we don't think all the colours will be available in Canada at launch. We also expect carrier specific exclusive to be announced later like with the S III and S4.

[MWC 2014] Sony unveils the Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet and Xperia M2

Mobile World Congress is happening as we speak in Barcelona and Sony has wasted no time in making a huge splash by unveiling the Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet and Xperia M2. The Xperia Z2 is as expected the successor to the Xperia Z1. It falls right in the wheelhouse of the leaks we've been seeing in the past few months. The Xperia Z2 Tablet like the Z2 is the successor to the Xperia Z Tablet. Finally the Xperia M2 is the successor to the Xperia M.

The Xperia Z2, on paper, is a modest bump up in specs to the well received Z1 with a 5.2 inch Full HD 1080p Display, 2.3GHz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 process (first in a smartphone), Adreno 330 GPU, 3GB of RAM, 3200mAh battery, 20.7MP camera with 4K capabilities.

The Xperia Z2 Tablet is a much more significant bump in specs as the Z Tablet was sporting the similar specs to the Z rather than the Z1. With a 10.1 inch Full HD 1920x1200 Display, 2.3GHz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 process (first in a tablet), Adreno 330 GPU and 3GB of RAM.

Finally the Xperia M2 is much more subdued with its 4.8-inch 540 x 960 (qHD) display, 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor, 8MP camera and 2300mAh battery.

Global availability is set for March for the Z2 and April for the M2 but no word on official Canadian availability, carriers or pricing, but we would be awfully surprised not to see all three devices hit the Canadian market in some way.
