Motorola XOOM making the trip to Canada

Android supporters in Canada longing for an Android 3.0 Honeycomb powered tablet will be happy to hear that the WiFi version will be hitting Canada in April.

With no real Android powered tablet offering in Canada outside of the Samsung Galaxy Tab and lesser tablets from smaller tablet makers like Viewsonic and Archos, the tablet optimized XOOM will be a very welcome addition to the very sparse collection of Android tablet devices in Canada.

The specs for this badboy includes:
  • Android 3.0 (Honeycomb)
  • 6500 mAh Battery
  • Nvidia Tegra 2 1 GHz dual-core processor
  • 32 GB Internal storage with external microSD slot (usable after SW update)
  • 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM Memory
  • 10.1 inch, 1280×800 pixel multitouch display
  • 5.0 megapixel rear-facing camera with Auto Focus 720p video capture and Dual LED Flash
  • 2.0 megapixel front-facing camera
  • Wi-Fi a/b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR

MobileSyrup is reporting that the Motorola XOOM will be hitting Canada in early April and the 3G version would be hitting Canada by mid year.

Futureshop has also gone ahead with pre-orders for the XOOM for the price of $599.99 and estimating an April 8 launch date. Expect other major electronic stores (Best Buy) to carry the XOOM as well.

Lastly TELUS, has made their commitment to sell the WiFi only XOOM, also for $599.99. It's interesting that they would offer the non-3G version. Perhaps there will be some bundle offers with the Huawei E5836 Mobile WiFi Hotspot.

  1. Exciting to hear this! Well said, Denis: the tablet market in Canada is sparse. I'm glad the launch won't be too far off the launch of the iPad 2. Now there's a real decision to make. Although I'd never pick an iPhone over an Android, I'm not entirely sure the app development is quite as far ahead as Apple's. However, I think the hardware (and Flash) make the Xoom a real competitor.
